MEADOW PARK CHATHAM COMMUNITY LAUDED FOR BEING ALL "HEART AND SOLE"

Long-term care community honoured with Alzheimer's Society award

(Chatham, ON) -- Life at Meadow Park Chatham is, first and foremost, about community! It should be no surprise then that residents and team members recently came together to support a cause they could all get behind -- the Alzheimer Society -- which offers memory-focused programs for residents and provides education to residents' family members and team members who work at the home.

To support the Alzheimer Society, the long-term care community came together in July to host Let's Get Physical, an 1980's-themed afternoon complete with a walking track and fun course with hula hooping and ring toss for residents, retro costumes and a Richard Simmons look-alike and live music by entertainer Crystal Gage. They also enjoyed a BBQ sponsored by Maple Leaf and donuts thanks to the kind Zaleski family. Residents recruited family and friends as sponsors to encourage them to complete the track which filled the parking lot and to raise money to support the local chapter of the Alzheimer Society. Together, residents, families and team members raised $1,100 and almost every resident made it out for the walk!

Lorraine, a resident of the community, with her family's support, raised $750 for the walk! She also received a prize for her costume, which was an inspiration to her fellow community members.

What residents did not expect was to receive a special honour for their fundraising activities from the Alzheimer Society itself: the Heart and Sole Award for being the long-term care community in Chatham-Kent to raise the most funds for the charity!

At a special event hosted at the home on Wednesday, the award was presented by the Alzheimer Society to Lorraine and her family on behalf of the Meadow Park Chatham community. To help celebrate the award and learn more about opportunities and challenges in Ontario's long-term care sector, including in the local community, Dave Epp, Member of Parliament for Chatham-Kent--Leamington, visited Meadow Park Chatham. In addition to learning more about our long-term care community, he shared his well wishes and thanks with community members. He was also updated on progress on the home's redevelopment, which is underway at 575 McNaughton Avenue West.

The award celebration also tied into the home's annual Fall Fair, which included a petting zoo, entertainment and seasonal treats for residents, their families, team members and volunteers at the home. Mr. Epp also shared birthday greetings with Mary, a resident, on the upcoming occasion of her 100th birthday.

"Meadow Park Chatham offers many excellent programs for residents living with dementia, but our home is about more than health care. It is a place where residents are supported in living their best today and tomorrow," said Ginelle Spence, Administrator of Meadow Park Chatham. "We could not make this happen without the support of the Alzheimer Society and many other partners in the broader community, including family members, volunteers and charities and our municipal and provincial partners, all of which come together to support our community of residents."

Meadow Park Chatham sincerely appreciates the support shown to its residents, families and team members during its fundraising event and for the years of support it has received from the Alzheimer Society and the broader community of Chatham-Kent.
