Residents Enjoyed Bonding with the Grade Eight Students Through Sharing Their Life Experiences

Avalon Retirement Lodge- Orangeville, Ontario

The residents at Avalon Retirement Lodge attended weekly sessions with the grade eight students of Island Lake Public School and had the opportunity to share their life experiences through words, photos and other cherished items. The residents looked forward to the session each week as they began building meaningful connections with the grade eight students. The students even gave them “homework” that they worked to complete before each session. The residents were referred to as the “Wiseones” throughout the program, and the students were referred to as the “Storytellers”. Each week, the students wrote about the life experiences of their Wiseone, building on the story by chapters as the weeks progressed. These chapters separated their childhood years, teen years, experiences with raising a family, work life, retirement life and important relationships. The students even included scanned photos of their Wiseones throughout each chapter.

On Wednesday, May 16th a Celebration Day was held at Island Lake Public School. On this day, the Wiseones dressed up for the big event that they had been looking forward to since the beginning of April. On this day, the grade eight students presented their Wiseone with a beautiful carnation, along with the complete Storybook of their life. There were smiles, tears and laughter but most importantly, there were lifelong memories and relationships built. The residents at Avalon Retirement Lodge are now looking forward to attending the Grade Eight Graduation this month, to support their Storytellers as they progress to the next chapter of their lives.

A special thanks goes out to The Dufferin Arts Council which is represented by Donna Henderson, for sponsoring this program. Her enthusiasm, expertise and good sense of humour was well noticed by the Wiseones! The Principle of Island Lake Public School, Sean Singh is deserving of a special recognition as well for his ongoing support and cooperation. A big “thank you” is also extended to Island Lake Public School teachers, Mardell Miller and Stacey Manzerolle for their kindness, hard work and organization throughout.
