Quilts of Valour - Remembrance Day Tribute

Canadian Navy Veteran - John Anderson

A Tribute to the Service of a Veteran living at Meadow Park, Chatham Long Term Care

Meadow Park Chatham’s annual Remembrance Day Service is an event that has been going on for more than 25 years.  For many of those years the Merlin Legion has been assisting us to create a meaningful and memorable service for our residents. This year a very special presentation took place for our resident and Canadian Navy Veteran, Mr. John Arthur Anderson.

JOHN ARTHUR ANDERSON - A Proud Veteran of the Canadian Navy

I joined the Canadian Navy on November 7th, 1952. Just barely 17 years old, I set out to explore the world. My first stop was in Windsor, Ontario, at the HMCS Hunter recruiting office. Five years of active duty took me from basic training at HMCS Cornwallis, in Digby, Nova Scotia to more intense defensive torpedo detection training at HMCS Stadacona; where my rand had changed from Ordinary Seaman to Able Seaman.

OFF TO SEA...Being stationed on the HMCS Magnificent, (we affectionately called her Maggie), my life forever changing as I attended the coronation in 1953 of Queen Elizabeth II, representing our country as Duty Bugler on the HCMS Magnificent. It was quite an honour.

Returning back to Stadacona had more training in store on the HMCS Kentville, mine sweeper and torpedo detection training on the HMCS Ungava and HMCS Micmac and then on the to my true love of diving, on the HMCS Granby. I began deep sea dive training, finishing in the top 5 of the class.

War time mission was not to be in the cards for me. When the conflict erupted in Cuba at the Bay of Pigs, I was sent a registered letter notifying me that I was on alert and to report for duty at any time. President John Kennedy and President Fidel Castro established a conflict resolution and combat duty for me was not required.

After a Naval career of 5 years active duty and 5 years in the reserve, I was honourably discharged with the rank of Leading Seaman and returned to civilian life as a deep sea diver in Lake Erie working for Underwater Gas. The rest, they say, is history.

My 55 year membership at Branch 28 legion, as well as the Naval Association, brought many good people and dear friends into my life.

My wife, Lila, always by my side and my children have hopefully learned from me: LOVE, COMMITMENT & DEDICATION.

Thank you for this honour today.

The Southwest Ontario Representatives of Quilts of Valour (QOV), an organization that presents specially made quilts to Veterans across Canada was present at the service to award Mr. John Anderson with a beautiful quilt. The quilt includes a panel with details of a Veteran’s service. The quilts are made to support our Canadian Armed Forces members, past and present, with quilts of comfort in their time of need.

"On behalf of my Father, John and my family, we would like to express our heartfelt "Thank You" to the Quilts of Valour Committee for choosing to honor our Father/Husband in this very prestigious way. This quilt represents to us the Love and Gratitude that is deserved by so many, and many more should receive......."
Linda Anderson Faubert (daughter), and the Anderson Family

The highlight for the day was the presentation to John of a beautiful quilt.  His family was present to help him accept and celebrate this prestigious gift from QOV.  There were many tears as John received his quilt and his daughter Linda read a tribute to his years of service.

Another resident Veteran, Mr. Doug Stuart was present for the service with his family.  Annually the Stuart family attends Meadow Park’s Remembrance Day Service to honour their Dad and Grandfather.  There are plans in the works for Doug to also receive a quilt before the end of this year.  Mr. Stuart celebrated his 100th Birthday this past June 2015.
