Leacock Care Centre celebrates after winning OLTCA  Innovation of the year award for success with their DementAbility Program

Leacock Care Centre-Orillia, Ontario

The Innovation of the Year award is presented to an active or Affiliate member that has achieved early results from change idea, research project or collaboration with other health care stakeholders that has a positive impact on residents, staff or the home.

Leacock Care Centre adopted the DementiAbility model, Montessori based activities, which are person centered methods used to create activities and routines based on the individual history and needs.  This model focuses on the person’s ability instead of seeing the person as having a disability and promoting them to be the best they can be.  It is a holistic approach requiring ongoing evaluation and adaptation for individual residents evolving needs and challenges.

Leacock Care Centre initiated activities such as starting a nursery, doll therapy, can crushing, sorting stations, fiddle aprons, laundry folding and colouring programs. The team’s goal was to create an environment where our residents living with dementia can achieve success and have the opportunity to live each day with meaningful purpose.

The home continues to promote DementiAbility, spreading awareness, adding updated programming and themed rooms and events. The team celebrated the outcomes with all disciplines, especially the front-line staff, families and most importantly, the residents.  The team endeavors to apply the organizations core purpose, “to make an outstanding difference in the lives of others” while promoting the culture change, to be the Long Term Care home of choice.
