2014 Circle of Excellence Award - Roberta Place, Barrie

Through the Ontario Long-Term Care Association, Roberta Place recognizes significant contributions and dedication of Grant Gall, this year's recipient of the Circle of Excellence Award. An exceptional and integral part of our team, Grant continuously demonstrates his commitment and devotion to the lives of everyone living at Roberta Place. We're proud to work beside him every day.

On a cold, but sunny day in February 1975 Doug and Nancy Gall were blessed with a baby boy, the last of 5 children – Grant. Although born with Downs Syndrome, Grant has never been considered disabled – not by his family, his peers nor the multitudes of people he has helped over the years.

Having grown up on a farm, Grant has a strong work ethic – nothing stops him until the job is done.  At home he feeds the calves, cleans out the pens, washes eggs and waters the garden flowers. In the house he does the vacuuming and hangs the laundry out on the line.

Grant is a world traveller having visited such places as: Israel, Jordan, Turkey, Florida, Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia and cruises in the Caribbean and Alaska.

Not only is he a great downhill skier but an accomplished water skier as well. But he isn’t content with those active sports; he also is involved in swimming, basketball, baseball and bowling.

Grant volunteers here at Roberta Place, but he finds time to help his community by being a member the Catalpa Community Support Services Dragon Boat Team.

Grant is happiest when giving to others, whether it’s helping in the laundry or with Bingo at Roberta Place, greeting everyone he meets with a cheery smile and wave. Our residents enjoy his easy manner and kind heart.

Our sister home, Avalon Care Centre in Orangeville first met Grant in 1985 when he participated in a co-operative education program through Orangeville District High School. Grant enjoyed his time at the Avalon so much that he continued to volunteer until 2010 when he and his family decided that we needed to team up again and he joined me at Roberta Place.

We are so fortunate to have Grant attend weekly at Roberta Place, bringing with him a friendliness and kindness that touches everyone he meets. This OLTCA Circle of Excellence Award is well deserved.
