National Be Heard Day

Better Seniors Care and Information Expo

Avalon Care Centre - Orangeville, Long-Term Care

March 7, 2017 - National "Be Heard" Day was not only a time to gather and raise awareness about the Better Seniors Care Campaign, but also an opportunity for vendors and information booths to present information to seniors in the community as well as caregivers too.

The Avalon's Seniors and Caregivers Expo included representatives from the Alzheimer’s Society, MS Society, CCAC, Dufferin Transit, VON Day program, CAMH, Avalon Retirement Lodge, Diabetes support from Headwaters, PRN Patient Transfer, Humber College, Dufferin Paramedic, CW Elder Abuse Ontario and DementiAbility to name a few. Also included at the event was a "Virtual Dementia Experience" for those who want to experience a day in the life of someone living with dementia.

VIRTUAL DEMENTIA EXPERIENCE - WHAT IS IT LIKE TO LIVE WITH DEMENTIA?

We heard from the experts about dementia care at home and supports available for caregivers as well we will talk about the Better Seniors’ Care Campaign and how the campaign can make a difference for long-term care in Orangeville. The event was open to seniors, caregivers and even those who are looking for a career in seniors’ health or accommodations. Free ice cream floats and tours were available to all who were in attendance.

There is an imminent need to address the upcoming wave of people who will need to access health services and supports. We can’t ignore the facts – we need to give back to those who have built this town to what we know today. Over the next 10 years there will be 50 per cent more seniors over the age of 75 – we have to improve services and accommodations today if we are to even start thinking about how we handle the needs of seniors tomorrow.

Avalon Care Centre is working in partnership with the Ontario Long-Term Care Association to raise awareness and make seniors’ care a priority for the 2017 Ontario budget through the Better Seniors’ Care Campaign. Pledge your support by visiting BetterSeniorsCare.ca and signing your name to the petition.

Today’s seniors have more complex medical needs that must be supported by the health system they have grown to depend on. As the numbers of seniors grow, by extension, so will the demands for long-term care and community supports for the elderly.

The Seniors and Caregivers Expo is a chance to share information to help guide the choices families will be facing in the future. The Better Seniors’ Care Campaign highlights changes that need to be made that will affect those choices as well. The plan that has been put forward includes four main priorities:

  1. More specialized staffing resources so that long-term care homes are better equipped to meet the growing complexities of the seniors we serve, particularly those living with dementia;
  2. A more sustainable program to renew older homes where funding grows with inflation;
  3. More long-term care beds to meet the needs of those in rural towns such as Orangeville where there is only one long-term care home to service the whole community so that families can stay closer together;
  4. Annual funding that is paced with inflation.

Through the Better Seniors Care Campaign, one of the priorities is very dear to the staff and residents at Avalon Care Centre. And that is the need to rebuild the aging home through the Ministry of Health’s redevelopment program.

The bottom line is that without new homes the sustainability of our sector will be immensely challenged. Upwards of 300 homes across the province need to be modernized.

We believe that cost effective changes need to be made in order to ensure older homes can rebuild. One change is that municipalities should not be charging development fees for construction of new healthcare-based accommodations such as long-term care, as it hinders the ability for many homes to renew. In some communities, it can cost upwards of $10 million in fees which is excessive for a building designed to provide nursing and personal support for seniors in the later stages of their life.
