Students from Bear Creek High School Present Residents with Custom Blankets

Roberta Place, Barrie Long-Term Care

In partnership with some passionate community members, Roberta Place residents were presented with some very special blankets, unique to their likes and personalities.

The project started last fall when staff at Roberta Place contacted Fabricland with a proposal to reuse scraps of fabric. These small pieces of material could be used to create "fidget blankets" for residents to enjoy. Sue Alexander, store manager, took to the challenge and began to collect donated scraps. Amazed by the staff's response, in twelve short weeks, thirteen full garbage bags of material were collected and brought to the long-term care home. It was during this time that customers also made inquiries on how to create their own blankets for loved ones in the community.

After the donations were collected and sorted, staff at Roberta Place reached out to the Bear Creek High School Fashion Department Faculty Member, Heather McNamara. Heather was thrilled with the idea and began working with twenty-two high school students to craft together blankets for the residents.

By using the WOW assessment, a method of learning more about residents by asking WHO they were, OBSERVING, and WHAT they were experiencing now, students designed unique blankets for residents. Residents become engaged with the blankets through the textile feel and colours of each piece.

On June 8th, the twenty-two students and faculty members delivered their custom masterpieces to the long-term care residents.  Based on the success of the project, Roberta Place is looking to expand the plans to be ongoing. The goal is to present every resident with their very own blanket.
