Alzheimer's Awareness

Staff participate in an Alzheimer's experience to gain a better understanding of the disease.

Royal Rose Place - Welland, Ontario

“Each year, 25,000 Canadians are diagnosed with dementia and by the year 2020, nearly 250,000 seniors in Ontario will be living with some form of dementia. These are our friends, neighbours and family members. It’s not just their disease. It’s ours too.” (Alzheimer Society:

Royal Rose Place hosted a simulation experience for its staff to better understand the experience of those living with dementia.  Staff members of all disciplines were invited to attend, and the hands on experience was well attended.
The simulation was presented by the Alzheimer Society of Niagara Region.  Our team was assigned a variety of diagnoses which were replicated with altered glasses, corn kernels in their shoes, taped fingers and a variety of other mock conditions.  Once equipped to enter the prepared environment, each individual was asked to complete a variety of everyday tasks.  Staff reported this experience to be a challenging, eye-opening experience.
Residents, staff and family also supported our annual Coffee Break and attended seminars to help understand Alzhemier's and other dementia-related diseases.  It was a wonderful opportunity to ask questions and collaborate with others.
A special thank you to our local chapter, Alzheimer Society of Niagara Region for their continual support in educating and supporting our staff, families and residents.
